Euphorbia tirucall
Firestick
Family: Euphorbiaceae
Genus: Euphorbia
Species: Tirucalli
Common name: Firestick, Pencil Cactus
Cultivars: None
Difficulty: Low
Description: This non-succulent sure looks like one! It has bushy growth pattern with seemly no rhyme or reason! It has various colors depending on light. In most homes it will be bright green with a little yellow on new growth. Grown in full sun, it can become vibrant red!
Mature size: 25 feet tall, yes, this is a tree!! It is unlikely that indoors it will exceed 5 feet tall and wide.
Light: Bright light. Prefers direct sunlight. The brighter the better!
Water: This plant like to dry 75%-100% of the way though. It is very drought tolerant. Make sure to fully saturate the root ball when watering.
Temperature: Ideal between 65-80 degrees Fahrenheit. Avoid temperatures below 50 degrees. This plant is hardy down to 32 degrees in brief spurts and can live year round in zones 9-11.
Humidity: Ambient home humidity is fine for this plant. It will not mind dry air.
Soil: An airy well draining mix is preferred. We use 2-parts coco coir, 2-parts perlite, 2-parts sand, 1-part bark.
Nutrition: This plant should be fed with a balanced fertilizer at half recommended dose on a monthly basis. If using grow lights, fertilize year-round. If using only natural light, fertilize from May to September.
Repotting: Only repot when the roots are coming out of drainage holes. Move up only 1 pot size when transplanting. This plant requires drainage holes in all planters. Do not fertilize for at least 2 weeks after transplanting. Water the plant in after transplant. Use protective gear (gloves and eye wear)!
Toxicity: Toxic to humans, dogs, and cats, the only toxic part is the white sap that flows with open wounds. If this toxin, even trace amounts, gets in your eye contact poison control. It can cause blindness. Poisonous to humans, dogs, and cats, contact a doctor or vet immediately if ingested. This is the most dangerous plant we own and sell! Be careful! Not recommended for homes with small children, known curious about plants animals.
Native to: Central Africa
Companion animals: Being both toxic and poisonous, we do not recommend this in any animal cages. Not kidding, don’t do it. This plant is no joke! Don’t even put it near any animals. Handle it with care yourself.
Euphorbia trigona
African Milk Tree
Family: Euphorbiaceae
Genus: Euphorbia
Species: Trigona
Common name: African Milk Tree, African Milk Bush, Candelabra Cacti
Cultivars: Normal, Ruby
Difficulty: Low
Description: This non-cactus sure looks like one! It has an upright growth point that branches as it matures making arms for the plant. Very old ones can become so dense with arms that they appear to become a dense bush. Do not be fooled by the smooth sizes and spikes, this is not a cactus! On distinguishing feature that is easy to tell on first glance are the small leaves that grow near the base of the spines. This is a great example of convergent evolution and is in no way related to true cactus.
Mature size: 6-9 feet tall! It is also notable that it can grow very fast compared to what you would expect, up to 2 feet per year.
Light: Bright light. Can tolerate direct sun if transitioned outside during summer months.
Water: This plant like to dry 75%-100% of the way though. It is very drought tolerant. Make sure to fully saturate the root ball when watering.
