Scindapsus pictus
Satin Pothos
Family: Araceae
Genus: Scindapsus
Species: Pictus
Cultivars: Silvery Ann, Jade Satin, Silver Satin, Silver Hero, Silver Splash, Exotica, Argyraeus
Common names: Satin Pothos, or referred to as Scindapsus + cultivar name excluding species name.
Difficulty: Medium to high
Description: This plant gets the common name from the similar spade-shaped leaf shape to the Pothos, although only distantly related. It has a thick leaf with a velvety satin finish. It is also a vine, like Pothos, but it is slower growing and has much larger leaves than a common Pothos. Most varieties have a combination of deep green and silver in interesting and exciting patterns that distinguish the different cultivars. It will only get the larger more mature leaves that show off the variations of the cultivars when grown up a moss pole.
Mature size: This plant gets up to 10 feet long vines with leaves getting around 4 inches wide.
Light: Bright indirect light. Under a grow light or a West or South facing window. Avoid direct sunlight as the plant can be burnt.
Water: This plant wants a deep watering when 50% dry. It is better to air on the size of being too dry.
Temperature: Ideal between 60-95 degrees Fahrenheit. Avoid temperatures below 55 degrees.
Humidity: This tropical plant will require additional humidity than most people’s homes will provide. Use a humidifier or greenhouse cabinet (our preferred method). It can adjust to ambient humidity, but will not keep the same sheen it is grown for.
Soil: A rich airy mix is needed for Scindapsus. We use 2-parts coco coir, 2-parts perlite, 1-part charcoal, 1 part bark, ½-part worm casting.
Nutrition: The Scindapsus genus needs regular feeding during the growing season. Fertilize monthly at half strength May through September or year-round if grown under grow lights.
Repotting: This plant will only require repotting when the roots are escaping the bottom or top of the planter. Even then you may want to wait. They thrive being root bound. This plant will require drainage holes in the planter.
Toxicity: Non-toxic to humans, dogs, and cats. Mildly poisonous to humans, dogs, and cats, causing gum bleeding, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach upset. While it is not considered fatal, please contact your doctor or vet if consumed. They may not be familiar with the species; however, they should be familiar with the genus and family of the plant.
Native to: Southeast Asia.
Companion Animals: This plant is not for herbivores but can be used in any tropical vivarium. We use the ‘Exotica’ cultivar in a Gargoyle Gecko habitat. Many of these cultivars are very expensive and should not be used in animal cages as they are for collectors.
Scindapsus trebuii
Satin Pothos
Family: Araceae
Genus: Scindapsus
Species: Trebuii
Cultivars: Normal, Moonlight, Dark Form
Common names: Satin Pothos, or referred to as Scindapsus + cultivar name excluding species name.
Difficulty: Medium to high
Description: This plant gets the common name from the similar spade-shaped leaf shape to the Pothos, although only distantly related. It has a thick leaf with a velvety satin finish. It is also a vine, like Pothos, but it is slower growing and has much larger leaves than a common Pothos. They have deep green and close to black colored leaves with a gradient that fades to a lighter color in the center. The leaves are substantially larger when mature than the pictus. To obtain the large leaf size, it will need support from a moss pole or trellis. It will still be a lovely vine if trailing or hanging but will not get the large leaves.
Mature size: This plant gets up to 8 feet long vines with leaves getting up to 20 inches long.
