Temporary General Care for all Hoya
While we work hard to compile a comprehensive list of care for every species we sell, we are unable to give more than general care at this time for such a large group of plants. But we will give you general guidance. We will have this section completed no later than May 01, 2024.
Difficulty: Low - Medium
Description: This genus of plants is full of diversity and has gained an almost cult like following. They are grown for the lovely waxy foliage on vines, simple care, and the FLOWERS! Getting them to flower can be challenging, but they all have very unique scents that are strong enough to fill a room! My favorite blooms are on the Hoya carnosa ‘Compacta’ which resemble being in a chocolate factory!
Size: From 2” – 20’ they are slow growing and can get crazy long vines.
Light: Bright indirect light. All Hoya need ample light, especially if the goal is to make them flower. Direct sun is not recommended for most species.
Water: Water when 75% dry for most species. The care is more like a succulent, than a lush tropical vine.
Temperature: Ideal between 65-95 degrees Fahrenheit. Avoid temperatures below 50 degrees.
Humidity: Varies, however, most require higher levels of humidity than most homes will provide. They like dry soil, but moist air. A cabinet or humidifier is recommended.
Soil: A quick draining soil that has ample air pockets is best. We use 2-parts coco coir, 2-parts perlite, 2-parts sand, 1-part bark, ½-part worm casting.
Nutrition: These plants should be fertilized monthly during the growing season of May-October.
Repotting: Only repot when the roots are coming out of drainage holes. Move up only 1 pot size when transplanting. This plant requires drainage holes in all planters.
Toxicity: Varies, be careful.
Native to: Asia, Oceana, Australia.
Companion Animals: These plants can be used in many a reptile and amphibian cage, but as toxicity varies, be careful.
